ibonsai is an application for the iphone which aims to add a bit of poetry to the otherwise chaotic world of
digital gadgetry. the application simulates the art of growing japanese bonsai trees on the mobile device.
while bonsais are already miniature, the digital versions are even smaller and don't require tricky pruning
or even watering. growing a bonsai is also easier on the iphone, only requiring a tap of the screen to start
the growing process. each tree grows in a completely unique way, rendering itself in three dimensions.
the final tree is displayed as a traditional japanese brush painting.

right, so after all the end of the year hurry, projects presentation, exhibition opening and so on I took 3 weeks to visit Brazil. Most of these pictures were taken in a small seaside town called Santo Andre. Here is how it went.

1. turn of the year fireworks as seen in a cab! yes, I had two New Years this year due to summer saving time, the first on the plane on my way to Bahia and the second in a cab on my way to Santo Andre.
2. After we arrived in Santo Andre we headed to this beach party and instantly went to light candles and jump de waves as we traditionally do!
3. On the 1st of January we set out to buy some lobsters from local fishermans.

Ok, so I haven't written a lot about my life lately. That's because I've been busy. Which is a good sign I suppose. Today is a year since I decided to change my life and move to a new country where a new life, with all the risks and opportunities that comes with any big move, had been waiting for me.

And as I approach my 3-0 birthday this year.(ok, there's still over 6 months to go...but the crisis has slowly began to form on my head!) I can see that it was a smart move. Of course it doesn't feel like that every day, but so, who is sure of their choices everyday anyway?

So, as resolutions go I think I pretty much got everything I'd hoped for last year:

1. a nice house - yes, I have been living in a lovely, big house with a great kitchen where I continue to cook for my friends, but with a difference: I also have a garden now and although England isn't famous for its nice weather I surely make the most of my backgarden on the weekends, reading, chatting and sunbathing. Now we only need a barbecue!
2. a nice job - after a couple of months working in a bakery and enjoying that feeling of not having to much to worry about (at the price of not having much money to spare as well) I started a new job that has opened up lots of new opportunities and has put me in contact with various people. So, if at one moment I thought that all I could be was an architect and then, a few years after a project manager or a graphic designer, now I have learnt a lot about curating, managing and producing art exhibitions as well as PRing for all sorts of cultural events. Not only can I make a smashing cappucino but I can also write telegrams now!
3. a masters degree - it will take me over a year to complete that but I'm on my way. It has been great to start studying again after 5 years only working and my classmates are so nice! It's a shame we only see each other once a week, but still, it feels like everyweek I have the chance to get to know one person more than I did the week before. Looking forward to the end of the semester though, kind of need a little vacation! Fingers crossed for the presentation tomorrow. I've been having a hard time speaking clearly in English. And I thought that I had passed the phase of being nervous in front of people...
4. friends - that's one of the best things about moving. You meet so many new people! English, Japanese, Polish, Israelian, South African, Italian... London is probably one of the most cosmopolitan place to be and although I live in a Brazilian "bubble" (I live with brazilians, work with brazilians and speak portuguese 80% of my time) it's incredible to be amongst so many different people all the time.

So as drummond would say: Para ganhar um ano-novo que mereça este nome, você, meu caro, tem de merecê-lo, tem de fazê-lo novo... or to win a New Year that actually deserves this name you have, my dear, to deserve it, to do it all over again...

So here I am, remembering the past year and cheering for a bright New Year ahead!

Once, a long time ago in the days of yore, I had a friend who was studying architecture to become, presumably, an architect.
This friend introduced me to other friends, who were also studying architecture. Then these friends had other friends who were architects - real architects doing real architecture like designing luxury condos that look a lot like glass dildos. And these real architects knew other real architects and now the only people I know are architects. And they all design glass dildos that I will never work or live in and serve only to obstruct my view of New Jersey.

Do not get me wrong, architects. I like you as a person. I think you are nice, smell good most of the time, and I like your glasses. You have crazy hair, and if you are lucky, most of it is on your head. But I do not care about architecture. It is true. This is what I do care about:

* burritos
* hedgehogs
* coffee

As you can see, architecture is not on the list. I believe that architecture falls somewhere between toenail fungus and invasive colonoscopy in the list of things that interest me.

Perhaps if you didn’t talk about it so much, I would be more interested. When you point to a glass cylinder and say proudly, hey my office designed that, I giggle and say it looks like a bong. You turn your head in disgust and shame. You think, obviously she does not understand. What does she know? She is just a writer. She is no architect. She respects vowels, not glass cocks. And then you say now I am designing a lifestyle center, and I ask what is that, and you say it is a place that offers goods and services and retail opportunities and I say you mean like a mall and you say no. It is a lifestyle center. I say it sounds like a mall. I am from the Valley, bitch. I know malls.

Architects, I will not lie, you confuse me. You work sixty, eighty hours a week and yet you are always poor. Why aren’t you buying me a drink? Where is your bounty of riches? Maybe you spent it on merlot. Maybe you spent it on hookers and blow. I cannot be sure. It is a mystery. I will leave that to the scientists to figure out.

Architects love to discuss how much sleep they have gotten. One will say how he was at the studio until five in the morning, only to return again two hours later. Then another will say, oh that is nothing. I haven’t slept in a week. And then another will say, guess what, I have never slept ever. My dear architects, the measure of how hard you’ve worked and how much you’ve accomplished is not related to the number of hours you have not slept. Have you heard of Rem Koolhaas? He is a famous architect. I know this because you tell me he is a famous architect. I hear that Rem Koolhaas is always sleeping. He is, I presume, sleeping right now. And I hear he gets shit done. And I also hear that in a stunning move, he is making a building that looks not like a glass cock, but like a concrete vagina. When you sleep more, you get vagina. You can all take a lesson from Rem Koolhaas.

Life is hard for me, please understand. Architects are an important part of my existence. They call me at eleven at night and say they just got off work, am I hungry? Listen, it is practically midnight. I ate hours ago. So long ago that, in fact, I am hungry again. So yes, I will go. Then I will go and there will be other architects talking about AutoCAD shortcuts and something about electric panels and can you believe that is all I did today, what a drag. I look around the table at the poor, tired, and hungry, and think to myself, I have but only one bullet left in the gun. Who will I choose?

I have a friend who is a doctor. He gives me drugs. I enjoy them. I have a friend who is a lawyer. He helped me sue my landlord. My architect friends have given me nothing. No drugs, no medical advice, and they don’t know how to spell subpoena. One architect friend figured out that my apartment was one hundred and eighty seven square feet. That was nice. Thanks for that.

I suppose one could ask what someone like me brings to architects like yourselves. I bring cheer. I yell at architects when they start talking about architecture. I force them to discuss far more interesting topics, like turkey eggs. Why do we eat chicken eggs, but not turkey eggs? They are bigger. And people really like turkey. See? I am not afraid to ask the tough questions.

So, dear architects, I will stick around, for only a little while. I hope that one day some of you will become doctors and lawyers or will figure out my taxes. And we will laugh at the days when you spent the entire evening talking about some European you’ve never met who designed a building you will never see because you are too busy working on something that will never get built. But even if that day doesn’t arrive, give me a call anyway, I am free.

The Embassy of Brazil proudly presents an exhibition of Maria Bonomi, one of the most respected visual artists currently working in Brazil.

Bonomi is recognised for her prolific production, covering a wide variety of media, including large public art pieces scattered in various cities around the world. Her work also features in both notable private and public collections in Brazil and abroad.

The exhibition will present a series of large format engravings, woodcuts and lithographs, as well as sculptures. Some of these works were displayed at Huelva Museum, Spain, in 2005 and at her latest solo exhibition at Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Brazil, in 2008. The show will also present a selection of previously unseen works.

Bonomi’s works are regarded as a milestone in the history of xylography on account of the special treatment given to the matrices, transforming them into highly elaborate sculptural pieces in their own right.

There are three fundamental vectors in Bonomi's route: her respect for the artistic craft, the craftsmanship in the technique of woodcutting and her engagement in the production of large scale public works. She has turned woodcutting into a paradigm and has recovered it via seemingly distant themes: lyical visions of planted fields, horizons, and poetic forms capable of unfolding into multiple meanings and endless cycles. These shapes repeat and multiply themselves in various ways, yet generating new identities each time: ‘I always do the same thing, and it is always different.’

Born in 1935 in Meina, Italy, Maria Bonomi holds a PhD in Public Art from the University of São Paulo. Her work includes sculpture, engraving and costume and set design. She has been awarded various prizes, amongst which are Best National Engraver, VIII São Paulo Biennial, 1965; Theadoron Prize, V Paris Biennial, 1967; International Jury Prize, XV International Engraving Biennial in Ljubljana, 1983; and Santos Prize – Engraving, Bunge Foundation, 1997.

after 10 days travelling and thinking about my life i arrived
in my room last night to find some wonderful and unexpected gifts...
i saw one sock hanging by the side of my bed and thought: oh my
what a mess have i left in my room... poor thais, next time i have
to remember to be more tidy! but that was only the foot of the
traces of the new creative friend that had passed some days looking
at my (full) walls.
if there is something i truly enjoy in life is receiving old friends
and making new friends. it never ends to amaze me how kind gestures
are still available around (even though sometimes i catch myself
thinking otherwise). and as the year passes by i realize that new
friends are the best gifts ever!
so this picture is to a new friend that likes to see things in a
different perspective. to naná.

Ontem recebemos a nossa primeira entrega: a caixa de
legumes orgânicos da riverford farm. A idéia é genial;
toda semana a fazenda divulga quais os vegetais estão
disponíveis e na época. Você faz o pedido e eles entregam
na sua casa. Como são vendidos uma quantidade grande da
mesma produção os legumes saem praticamente o mesmo preço
do que se comprados no supermercado...
E a maioria ainda é produzido aqui na inglaterra, ou seja,
acabamos consumindo um produto local e que foi colhido
já maduro!

Sei que o dia dos namorados por aqui já passou...
foi sábado passado, mas acabou que tive um final de semana
tão busy que não escrevi nada. Mas fica ai então uma comemoração

Namorados

Quem não tem namorado é alguém que tirou férias remuneradas de si mesmo.
Namorado é a mais difícil das conquistas. Difícil porque namoro de verdade é
muito raro. Necessita de adivinhação, de pele, de saliva, lágrima, nuvem,
quindim, brisa ou filosofia.

Paquera, gabiru, flerte, caso, transa, envolvimento, até paixão é fácil.
Mas, namorado, mesmo, é muito difícil. Namorado não precisa ser o mais bonito,
mas aquele a quem se quer proteger e quando se chega ao lado dele a gente
treme, sua frio e quase desmaia pedindo proteção. A proteção dele não precisa
ser parruda, decidida ou bandoleira: basta um olhar de compreensão ou mesmo de
aflição. Quem não tem namorado, não é que não tem um amor: é quem não sabe o
gosto de namorar. Se você tem pretendentes, dois paqueras, um envolvimento e
dois amantes, mesmo assim pode não ter um namorado.

Não tem namorado quem não sabe o gosto da chuva, cinema, sessão das duas,
medo do pai, sanduíche de padaria ou drible no trabalho. Não tem namorado quem
transa sem carinho, quem se acaricia sem vontade de virar sorvete ou lagartixa
é quem ama sem alegria. Não tem namorado quem faz pacto de amor apenas com a
infelicidade. Namorar é fazer pactos com a felicidade ainda que rápida, escondida,
fugida ou impossível de durar.

Não tem namorado quem não sabe o valor de mãos dadas: de carinho escondido na
hora em que passa o filme: de flor catada no muro e entregue de repente, de poesia
de Fernando Pessoa, Vinícius de Moraes ou Chico Buarque lida bem devagar, de
gargalhada quando fala junto ou descobre a meia rasgada; de ânsia enorme de viajar
junto para a Escócia ou mesmo de metrô, bonde, nuvem, cavalo alado, tapete mágico
ou foguete interplanetário.

Não tem namorado quem não gosta de dormir agarrado, fazer cesta abraçado, fazer
compra junto. Não tem namorado quem não gosta de falar do próprio amor, nem de ficar
horas e horas olhando o mistério do outro dentro dos olhos dele, abobalhados de
alegria pela lucidez do amor. Não tem namorado quem não redescobre a criança própria
e a do amado e sai com ela para parques, fliperamas, beira d'agua, show do Milton
Nascimento, bosques enluarados, ruas de sonhos e musical da Metro.

Não tem namorado quem não tem música secreta com ele, quem não dedica livros,
quem não recorta artigos, quem não chateia com o fato de o seu bem ser paquerado.

Não tem namorado quem ama sem gostar; quem gosta sem curtir; quem curte sem aprofundar.

Não tem namorado quem nunca sentiu o gosto de ser lembrado de repente no
fim de semana,na madrugada ou meio-dia de sol em plena praia cheia de rivais.
Não tem namorado quem ama sem se dedicar; quem namora sem brincar; quem
vive cheio de obrigações; quem faz sexo sem esperar o outro ir junto com ele.

Não tem namorado quem confunde solidão com ficar sozinho e em paz.

Não tem namorado quem não fala sozinho, não ri de si mesmo, e quem
tem medo de ser afetivo. Se você não tem namorado porque não descobriu
que o amor é alegre e você vive pesando duzentos quilos de grilos
e de medo, ponha a saia mais leve, aquela de chita, e passeie de mãos
dadas com o ar. Enfeite-se com margaridas e ternuras, e escove a
alma com leves fricções de esperança. De alma escovada, e coração
estouvado, saia do quintal de si mesmo e descubra o próprio jardim.
Acorde com gosto de caqui e sorria lírios para quem passe debaixo da janela.

Ponha intenções de quermesse em seus olhos e beba licor de contos de fada.
Ande como se o chão estivesse repleto de sons de flauta e do céu
descesse uma névoa de borboletas, cada qual trazendo uma pérola
falante a dizer frases sutis e palavras de galanteira: Se você não
tem namorado é porque ainda não enlouqueceu aquele pouquinho necessário

In celebration of Oscar Niemeyer, the Embassy of Brazil,
in association with Thomas Dane Gallery, is pleased to
announce an exhibition of works by Italian artist, Luisa Lambri.
The show will bring together a previously unseen selection
of Lambri’s photographs of three of the architect’s acclaimed
buildings: Casa das Canoas, Casa do Baile and the
Ministério da Educação.

Far from documenting architecture, though, Lambri proposes
a more abstract and personal recording of the buildings’
atmosphere, her experience of the space and her relationship
to it.

In early 2003 Lambri spent two months photographing various
buildings designed by Niemeyer in Rio de Janeiro,
Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and Brasília. She went upon
the invitation of Brazilian curator Adriano Pedrosa,
on behalf of the Coleção Teixeira de Freitas,
Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon.

Having been drawn to the geometry and formal details of
modernist interiors, the artist recalls being compelled
by Niemeyer’s uniquely sensual approach to his materials,
noting that his buildings had a completely different
‘temperature’. She was interested in the way that Niemeyer
was able to open up and distort the orthogonal modernist
grid structure by introducing feminine, curved lines.
Through her photographs, Lambri wanted to articulate the
dialogue that Niemeyer sets up between architecture and nature.

Included in the exhibition are photographs of ‘Casa das Canoas’,
Niemeyer’s own home built in Rio de Janeiro in 1953, known
locally as ‘the architect’s house’. Lambri returned to the
house many times to photograph it. The resulting intimate
understanding of the building is revealed in her paired
images of the covered patio and the way in which the dense
tropical garden encroaches into the space (Casa das Canoas #01 and #02).
In these images, the black, tiled floor meets the rich green,
sunlit plants, framed by the white painted concrete overhanging ceiling.

During her trip Lambri also photographed ‘Casa do Baile’,
a dance hall in Belo Horizonte built by Niemeyer in 1942.
Her three photographs of the outdoor terrace of ‘Casa do Baile’
look out across the water - the straight, centered horizon
line in the distance, punctuated by cylindrical columns,
dramatizes the heady optical effect created by the undulating
concrete structure that skirts the water. Often working in
series and recording minute changes, or editing the framing
of each image slightly, Lambri requires the viewer to look
closely and carefully to see subtle differences. Similarly
in this group, the movement of the clouds, the shifting shadow
on the ground and the faint billow of smoke in the distance
track the passing of time.

Lambri’s image of the ‘Ministério da Educação e Saúde’
(Ministry of Education and Health) in Rio de Janeiro
sits as a complementary image to the group and links all
three series. Featuring a section of an internal wall of
glass cubes and their reflection on the concrete floor, Lambri
has isolated and called attention to the grid. In both Lambri’s
photographs of ‘Casa das Canoas’ and ‘Casa do Baile’, she
captures the play between nature and architecture, colour and shape,
and above all, the grid and the curve.

Born in Como in 1969, Lambri studied Literature and Philosophy
at the University of Milan. She currently lives in Milan and
travels extensively. Her work has been exhibited in dAPERTutto,
48th Venice Biennial, 1999, Dreams and Conflicts: The Viewer's
Dictatorship, 50th Venice Biennial, 2003, and Italics: Italian
Art between Tradition and Revolution 1968-2008, Palazzo Grassi,
Venice, 2008. Solo exhibitions include the Baltimore Museum of Art,
The Carnegie Museum of Arts, The Menil Collection in Houston
and Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge. A solo exhibition at the Museum
of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles is scheduled for September 2009.
Currently, Lambri has a solo show at Luhring Augustine, New York.

Com a chegada de dezembro acabo sempre refletindo sobre
o ano que se passou. Recebi esse texto por email hoje e
achei engraçado como as se assemelhou ao último mês de maio:
hora de vender todas as minhas coisas emudar de vida!
E assim foi: computador, ipod, camera digital, tv, dvd, roupas,
sapatos, sofa, eletrodomesticos... enfim acho que só ficaram
algumas cartas, cds, materiais de desenho, fotos, alguns vestidos
e coisas que continham alguma memória. Até meus primeiros
trabalhos de faculdade que estavam guardados há bastante tempo
foram jogados fora.

Foram duas semanas em que as pessoas que iam a minha casa sempre
pegavam alguma peça de roupa e diziam: "nossa mas isso é tão a
sua cara, quando você voltar pode pegar de volta ta!" e saiam com a
sacola cheia, um sorriso no rosto e um aperto no coração de
estarem levando um pouco de mim pra casa. E eu ficava toda feliz
de estar deixando um pouco de mim pra trás, ainda andando pela
cidade.

Cheguei em Londres com as duas malas de roupa que sobraram e uma
felicidade enorme de ter comigo o que eu precisava. Confesso que
ainda tem algumas roupas que até hoje não usei, mas estão guardadas
pra hora certa.

Aos poucos a vida foi se ajeitando e hoje, três meses depois
de ter me mudado pra minha casa definitiva vejo o tanto de coisa
que juntei em tão pouco tempo.

No fim a sensação que fica é que foi um ano de muitas perdas e
ganhos: perdi um emprego e ganhei outro, com isso ganhei mais
experiência e muitos novos contatos; perdi minha casa antiga,
meu toca disco e ganhei um quintal e uma bicicleta; perdi os
almoços na casa da minha avó (que não tem preço) e no bar do
antônio e ganhei os jantares no vietnamita e turco do lado da
minha casa; perdi o mercado central e ganhei o columbia flower
market, perdi os finais de semana no RJ mas ganhei os em Paris...
sem contar todos os novos amigos!

Enfim, o bom é que depois de tantas mudanças, que venha 2009
com muito amor, felicidade e paz.

VENDE-SE TUDO

No mural do colégio da minha filha encontrei um cartaz
escrito por uma mãe, avisando que estava vendendo tudo o
que ela tinha em casa, pois a família voltaria a morar
nos Estados Unidos. O cartaz dava o endereço do bazar
e o horário de atendimento. Uma outra mãe, ao meu lado,
comentou:

_ Que coisa triste ter que vender tudo que se tem.

_Não é não, respondi, já passei por isso e é uma lição de vida.

Morei uma época no Chile e, na hora de voltar ao Brasil,
trouxe comigo apenas umas poucas gravuras, uns livros e uns
tapetes. O resto vendi tudo, e por tudo entenda-se: fogão,
camas, louça, liquidificador, sala de jantar, aparelho de som,
tudo o que compõe uma casa. Como eu não conhecia muita gente
na cidade, meu marido anunciou o bazar no seu local de trabalho
e esperamos sentados que alguém aparecesse. Sentados no chão.
O sofá foi o primeiro que se foi. Às vezes o interfone tocava
às 11 da noite e era alguém que tinha ouvido comentar que ali
estava se vendendo uma estante. Eu convidava pra subir e em dez
minutos negociávamos um belo desconto. Além disso, eu sempre
dava um abridor de vinho ou um saleiro de brinde, e lá se iam
meus móveis e minhas bugigangas. Um troço maluco: estranhos
entravam na minha casa e desfalcavam o meu lar, que a cada dia
ficava mais nu, mais sem alma .

No penúltimo dia, ficamos só com o colchão no chão, a geladeira
e a tevê. No último, só com o colchão, que o zelador comprou e,
compreensivo, topou esperar a gente ir embora antes de buscar.
Ganhou de brinde os travesseiros.

Guardo esses últimos dias no Chile como o momento da minha
vida em que aprendi a irrelevância de quase tudo o que é
material. Nunca mais me apeguei a nada que não tivesse valor
afetivo. Deixei de lado o zelo excessivo por coisas que foram
feitas apenas para se usar, e não para se amar.

Hoje me desfaço com facilidade de objetos, enquanto que
torna-se cada vez mais difícil me afastar de pessoas que
são ou foram importantes, não importa o tempo que estiveram
presentes na minha vida. Desejo para essa mulher que está
vendendo suas coisas para voltar aos Estados Unidos a mesma
emoção que tive na minha última noite no Chile .

Dormimos no mesmo colchão, eu, meu marido e minha filha,
que na época tinha 2 anos de idade. As roupas já estavam
guardadas nas malas. Fazia muito frio. Ao acordarmos, uma
vizinha simpática nos ofereceu o café da manhã, já que
não tínhamos nem uma xícara em casa.

Fomos embora carregando apenas o que havíamos vivido,
levando as emoções todas: nenhuma recordação foi vendida
ou entregue como brinde. Não pagamos excesso de bagagem
e chegamos aqui com outro tipo de leveza.

Recessions give space for new ideas to flourish

When we come to look back on the 2008-2009 recession,
it will be seen to have had important economic consequences;
it will have taken us "back to basics", rebalancing the
spending excesses of the past ahead of the next round of excess.
It is the economic equivalent of Lent. The recessions of the
early 1980s and the 1990s played similar roles. Recessions
are times when the unspeakable happens; when the foundation on
money that grabs attention, but in the long term the effect of
the recession will be felt as much in one's day-to-day work as it
will be in one's pocket. While the economic effects of recession
can be dire, in the long term the effect on work and working habits
can be positive.

The 1981-82 recession heralded the end of the notion of a
"job for life". Jobs and careers would never be the same.
The mantra following the 1980s recession was that of the
"free agent". The relationship between employees and employer
was described as moving from "parent-child" to "adult-adult";
flexible working was increasingly seen as a viable option and
only the deluded thought they had a job for life. This is
increasingly seen as the norm, bringing despair to some and a
sense of liberation to others.

The recession of 1990-91 accelerated these changes while adding
one more important dimension – that of globalisation. Costs were
cut by moving work out of the developed countries into the labour
markets of the emerging nations such as India and eastern Europe.
What began as the exodus of low-cost work accelerated over the next
10 years into the globalisation of talent in sectors such as
information technology and research.

So what impact will the current recession have on work over the
next decade? Of course, these trends are easy to spot in hindsight –
more difficult when you are in the midst of the downturn. But there
are enough clues for us to make a guess.

First, while the focus is still on shoring up finance and the
economy, in time we will begin to question the prevailing norms
of leadership and decision-making. The dominant "command and
control" leadership style that allows a chief executive such as
Richard Fuld at Lehman Brothers unilaterally to make decisions
about the whole company will increasingly come under scrutiny.
If the crowd is indeed wise, why do we put our faith in the
decisions and knowledge of a tiny fraction of people? I expect
to see over the coming years a growing realisation that
distributed decision-making and leadership to a wider group of
diverse people results in better decisions. This will have
profound implications for the selection and development of leaders.

Next, past recessions have often served to accelerate the
development of practices and processes that had limited
popularity pre-recession. Before the 1990s recession,
for example, off-shoring was seen to be too complex and
difficult an option. It was only with the cost imperatives
of the recession that off-shoring was initially pushed and
then eventually became a norm, later to be broadened and
deepened into its current application. The same is true
of group-ware technologies, which have had limited uptake
as people said they would prefer to meet face to face.
Now, however, those who last year would have jumped on a
plane to attend meetings have had their travel budgets
slashed. They are being forced to use video conferencing
and webcasts. Once the cost-cutting is relaxed, some will
return to the airports. Others, however, will have
fundamentally changed their habits and begun to build
working communities that are virtual.

Finally, the 2008-2009 recession will profoundly change
the way occupations are seen. Each previous recession
has had some impact on perceptions. The 1990s recession
slowed the rush to technology and start-ups. The current
one may well have the same impact on banking, which has
been a huge magnet for talent. The upside would be that
our most talented youngsters might look to more than just
investment banking for a career.

Recessions are a time of destruction of the old order, a
time when assumptions are questioned and nascent practices
and ideas are given space to flourish. That is little
cheer for now but, in the longer term, an enormous stimulus
for change.

don't get me wrong, quero conhecer as coisas que fazem uma cidade
ter se tornado como ela é, mas é tão interessante viver o dia a dia
corriqueiro dos lugares e se dar o tempo de sentar e conversar com quem
te acompanha. descobrir os lugares que não estão no guia.
essa viagem pra berlin foi assim, andando 10 horas por dia e botando
o papo em dia. uma delícia.

e como cada época da vida parece ter uma trilha sonora
exclusiva eu vou passando, de som em som, aumentando
meu repertório e minhas lembranças. pode ser um final
de semana escutando um cd no repeat ou um ano ouvindo todos.

em brasilia eu escutava beastie boys(1996). até que em 2006
eu os vi no tim festival. melhor show da vida. ainda não
foi superado. era só eu e eles. 5 dias com as pernas doendo.

em porto alegre a lauren hill(1999). em 2007 show no rio, eu e caio,
lotadasso...bebendo cachaça 51 sem poder mexer um cm pro lado.
pena que ela não tinha mais voz. mas tá valendo.

em belo horizonte, primeiro nação zumbi(2000). já perdi a conta de
quantos shows deles que já fui.

tim maia. mas ja tinha ido no show em 1998.
poucos meses antes de sua morte.

ed motta entre e ouça na praia do rosa 2002. show logo depois.

depois veio o jazz. ella fitzgerald, chet baker, miles davies,
billie holiday,nina simone... (mais ou menos nesta ordem)
pena que esses eu nunca os verei.

strokes. não parava de escutar. show com o baiano em 2005, correndo
no meio da multidão.

ai pulei pro samba. tudo do chico buarque. ótimo show no canecão
em janeiro de 2007. muita sorte ter conseguido ingresso no dia.

nouvelle vague. ja ouvia um pouco. agora com ingresso na mão pro
show em dezembro é hora de intensificar...

e assim vou indo.

claro que esses não foram todos os shows que fui em minha vida.
e olha que teve muitos. e variados.
mas lembro de todos, e cada um me faz lembrar alguém, assim
como cada música.

adoro show. pode me chamar que eu vou. mas eu gosto de ver em pé
e de preferência la na frente.

impressionante como a vida toma rumos proprios.
nao sei se aqui em londres a nossa sensacao de
tempo acaba sendo alterada. 10 minutos na verdade
sao 30 minutos. voce entra numa estacao de metro e,
na hora que sai seu corpo fala que passaram-se
10 mins e seu relogio diz 30. ai quando voce se depara
com uma pessoa que nasceu em 1992 voce logo pensa:
nossa uma criança! e na verdade elas já estão por ai
fazendo musica. o tempo passa rapido. desde que cheguei
aqui tudo que planejei nao aconteceu, ou melhor, aconteceu
antes do que eu imaginava... sera que esses ultimos
